What an odd thing to say. Illegitimacy isn’t a model in any sense of the word, and it is especially irrelevant in this day & age, I would hope you wouldn’t think parents should marry for the sake of children regardless of the state of their own relationship. I would hope that is, but unfortunately I know better than to expect it. Also your parents no longer have to be married for you to be legally recognised as the child of your father; i.e. his legitimate child. The older term is redundant.
The simple fact is that a marriage is legally and practically about recognizing the relationship between the two individuals being married, because of the type of relationship these two may indeed have children at some stage, but then they might also buy a house together, get a joint bank account, argue about the remote control, and holiday together, none of which is inherent or definitive of what marriage is either.
Yes, it is true that there is an illegitimacy crisis in the usa. But this does not prove that marriage is not primarily about reproduction. I would hope that you do not support illegitimacy as model to follow.
Nope, I’m afraid not, if there are exceptions then clearly your meaning is not inherent or definitive. In point of fact it is not the reason the majority of people get married, 40% (and rising) of babies in the U.S. are born to unmarried couples for example, but this is a subject you seem to have little to no knowledge of and yet bizarrely seem to insist on offering opinions based on your own preconceptions as though they were facts while refusing to learn any actual facts about the subject.

Lol I gotta assume you’ve never been married. I have been for 10 yrs & no children yet, I can assure you having children is not a definitive reason to marry. If it were inherent to the purpose & basis of marriage then the word ‘marriage’ would mean “relationship for producing children” so the sentence ‘the infertile married couple’ would be an oxymoron, which it clearly isn’t. There are many reasons people choose to marry, legal benefits, demonstration of commitment, tradition & so on.
